Friday 5.15.20
Moon Phases Activity
You will need a ping pong ball, a light bulb (or a flashlight), and a dark room (if you don't have a ping pong ball, any other ball will work, but a white ball will work the best)
- Attach your ball to a pencil or a stick
- The light bulb represents the sun, the ball represents the moon, and you represent the earth
- Hold the ball out in front of you and slowly spin in a circle (the light bulb/flashlight stays still)
- While spinning, observe how the light reflects onto the ball, and how parts of the ball are more or less visible as it changes positions.
- Focus on the part of the "moon" where the "sun" is shining. This represents the moon phases!

- Pour some water into the ziplock bag, seal it shut. and tape it to a window
- If available, add food coloring to the water!
- Each day, students will observe the changes in their bags, and record their observations in their science notebooks
